Mustachioed Man on Bicycle from Constantinople

Via Flickr:
A dapper man in a pin striped suit and cap balances on a bicycle in this cabinet card from the Parnasse studio in Constantinople. I was impressed with his ability to keep the bicycle upright with no brace until I examined it at high magnification. It is clear from the cross hatched retouching that there was a brace under his right hand and behind his right leg.

Doc Holliday's Badass Mustache

Doc Holliday 1851 - 1887
John Henry "Doc" Holliday (August 14, 1851 – November 8, 1887) was an American gambler, gunfighter and dentist of the American Old West, who is usually remembered for his friendship with Wyatt Earp and his involvement in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral.

As a young man, Holliday earned a D.D.S. degree in dentistry and set up a practice in Atlanta, Georgia. However, in 1873 he was diagnosed with tuberculosis, the same disease that had claimed his mother when he was 15. He moved to the American southwest in hopes that the climate would prolong his life. Taking up gambling as a profession, he acquired a reputation as a deadly gunman.

During his travels, he met and became good friends with Wyatt Earp and Earp's brothers. In 1880, he moved to Tombstone, Arizona, and participated alongside the Earps in the famous gunfight. This did not settle matters between the two sides, and Holliday was embroiled in ensuing shootouts and killings. He successfully fought being extradited for murder, and died in bed at a Colorado hotel/sanatorium at the age of 36.

The legend and mystique of his life is so great that he has been mentioned in countless books, and portrayed by various actors in numerous movies and television series. For the 100-plus years since his death, debate has continued about the exact crimes he may have committed during his life. (via Wikipedia)

An Overpainted Solar Enlargement Fragment

Via Flickr:
A small solar enlargement. The mount board is brittle and the edges have crumbled into a ragged, freeform shape. It speaks about the process of painting solar enlargements. When a small negative, likely a cdv, is projected onto photographic paper using sunlight and an enlarging camera, the resulting print will probably be rather soft and lack detail. The photographic retoucher will then, with varying degrees of skill, retouch and paint the print to add back detail. In some cases the result shows little or none of the underlying photograph. If the quality of the negative and the skill of the enlarging are good enough there may still show photographic detail. Close examination of this print shows some of the original photograph in the beard but everything else is overpainted. A faint oval around the portrait shows that it was in a mat for a long period of time.

W.T. Delihant, President of the Standard Washed Coal Company

From the 1904 Vanity Cartoon Book, Illinoisans As We See ‘Em, comes a smoking gun in the form of the self-paid caricature of Chicagoan W.T. Delihant, President of the Standard Washed Coal Company. Delihant, holding a piece of coal and a magician’s wand, with a goldfish bowl of water nearby, proudly fancied himself as a “Sleight of Hand Performer”, just like today’s coal companies distract the public from the dangers of Climate Destabilization, with their own sleight-of-hand promises involving uninvented & mythological Clean Coal Technology.

Sultan of Egypt -- Hussein Kamel Pasha (LOC)

Sultan Hussein Kamel (Arabic: السلطان حسين كامل‎; 21 November 1853 – 9 October 1917) was the Sultan of Egypt from 19 December 1914 to 9 October 1917, during the British protectorate over Egypt.

Hussein Kamel was the son of Khedive Isma'il Pasha, who ruled Egypt from 1863 to 1879. Hussein Kamel was declared Sultan of Egypt on 19 December 1914, after the occupying British forces had deposed his nephew, Khedive Abbas Hilmi II, on 5 November 1914. The newly created Sultanate of Egypt was declared a British protectorate. This brought to an end the de jure Ottoman sovereignty over Egypt, which had been largely nominal since Muhammad Ali's seizure of power in 1805.

Upon Hussein Kamel's death, his only son, Prince Kamal al-Din Husayn, declined the succession, and Hussein Kamel's brother Ahmed Fuad ascended the throne as Fuad I. At the beginning of Naguib Mahfouz's novel Palace Walk, Ahmad Abd al-Jawwad says "What a fine man Prince Kamal al-Din Husayn is! Do you know what he did? He refused to ascend the throne of his late father so long as the British are in charge." via Wikipedia.org
