Charlie Chaplin had a Fantastic Mustache

The Pilgrim (1923)

Short Film
Writer/Director: Charles Chaplin
Cinematographer: Roland Totheroh
Cast: Charles Chaplin, Edna Purviance, Kitty Bradbury, Syd Chaplin, Mack Swain, Charles Reisner, Tom Murray
via the One-Line Review
An escaped convict on the lam, disguised as a preacher, is mistaken for the new minister of Devil's Gulch, where he muddles through a service, falls for his landlady’s daughter, and comes unstuck at the hands of a former cellmate, in this tremendously entertaining if somewhat unexceptional Chaplin short. Iain.Stott

Mack Swain, American Actor

Mack Swain (February 16, 1876 - August 25, 1935) was an American actor and vaudevillian, prolific throughout the 1910s, 1920s and 1930s. ) from Wikipedia

Mack Swain (1876-1935) -American comedian. Outer: Entered show business quite young, touring with minstrel shows, vaudeville troupes and stock companies. In 1899, he married Cora King. Spent some two decades on the stage, before joining the Keystone stable in his late 30s. 6’2”, 280 lbs. Started out as a support to Charlie Chaplin, playing his large size off the diminutive comedian as a heavy foil, before starring in his own series as an oversized lecher named Ambrose with a huge mustache and heavy make-up. Remained with Keystone for 4 years, then moved around to several studios, as his initial film career waned. Married. Rescued by Charlie Chaplin, who cast him in his most memorable role as prospector Big Jim McKay in The Gold Rush, in 1925, where in his hunger and delerium, he imagines Chaplin as an edible chicken. Played character parts and occasional leads in feature films, and then retired, before dying of a probable heart attack. Inner: Genial, modest, lovable. Large-framed lifetime, once again, of playing with the comic possibilities of a huge body, and once more being undone by his appetites and a heart that could not support his overblown physical frame.

Erbprinz Max von Baden, Chancellor of Germany

prinz Max von Baden

Maximilian of Baden (also known as Max von Baden; full name: Maximilian Alexander Friedrich Wilhelm of Baden) (10 July 1867 – 6 November 1929) was a German nobleman and politician. He was heir to the grand duchy of Baden and in 1918 briefly served as chancellor of Germany, overseeing the transformation into a parliamentary system.

Life

As Chancellor, October 1918
Born in Baden-Baden, Maximilian was the son of Prince Wilhelm of Baden, third son of Leopold, grand duke of Baden, and Princess Maria Maximilianovna of Leuchtenberg, a niece of Alexander IICzar of Russia.
He was named after his maternal grandfather, Maximilian Jevgenevich de Beauharnaisduke of Leuchtenberg, and bore a resemblance to his cousin,Napoleon IIIemperor of the French.
Following the death of his father in 1897, he was heir to the grand-ducal throne of his cousin Frederick II.

[edit]Chancellor

Noted as a liberal before and during the First World War, he was appointed Chancellor of Germany in October 1918 in order to negotiate an armistice with the Allies in the last days of the war. Although he had serious reservations about the way theGerman General Staff wanted to conduct negotiations, he accepted the charge, and appointed a government that for the first time included representatives of the Social DemocratsFriedrich Ebert and Philipp Scheidemann.
The government's efforts to secure an armistice were interrupted by the outbreak of revolution in Germany in early November. Maximilian urged Emperor William II to abdicate. Despite similar advice by Paul von Hindenburg and Wilhelm Groener of the General Staff, the Emperor considered abdication only as Emperor, not as King of Prussia. On 9 November 1918, Maximilian went ahead and announced the abdication anyway, and then resigned in favor of Friedrich Ebert.

[edit]Later life

Prince Maximilian, Margrave of Baden, spent the rest of his life in retirement. In 1928, following the death of Grand Duke Frederick II, he became head of the House of Baden. He died at Salem the following year.

Lord Kitchener Wants You to grow a Mustache

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Britons: Lord Kitchener Wants You. Join Your Country's Army! God save the King.
A 1914 recruitment poster depicting Secretary of State for War Lord Kitchener above the words "WANTS YOU" was the most famous image used in the British Army recruitment campaign of World War I. The poster was designed by Alfred Leete and had first appeared as a cover illustration for London Opinion, one of the most influential magazines in the world, on 5 September 1914. A similar poster used the words "YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU". It is often wrongly referred to as "BRITONS WANTS YOU".

On the outbreak of the First World War, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Herbert Asquith appointed Kitchener as Secretary of State for War. Kitchener was the first member of the military to hold the post and was given the task of recruiting a large army to fight Germany.

The poster has often been seen as a driving force helping to bring millions of men into the Army. The image first appeared in the front cover of the hugely influential London Opinion magazine on 5 September 1914, a month that had the highest number of volunteers. In response to requests for reproductions, the magazine issued postcard-sized copies, and the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee obtained permission to use the design in poster form. The Times recorded the scene in London on 3 January 1915; "Posters appealing to recruits are to be seen on every hoarding, in most windows, in omnibuses, tramcars and commercial vans. The great base of Nelson's Pillar is covered with them. Their number and variety are remarkable. Everywhere Lord Kitchener sternly points a monstrously big finger, exclaiming 'I Want You'". Although it became one of the most famous posters in history, its widespread circulation did not halt the decline in recruiting.

Astronomer and Alchemist Tycho Brahe had a Fantastic Mustache

Tycho Brahe (14 December 1546 – 24 October 1601), born Tyge Ottesen Brahe, was a Danish nobleman known for his accurate and comprehensive astronomical and planetary observations. Coming from Scania, then part of Denmark, now part of modern-day Sweden, Tycho was well known in his lifetime as an astronomer and alchemist.

In his De nova stella (Of new stars) of 1573, he refuted the theory of the celestial spheres by showing the celestial heavens were not in an immutable or unchanging state of perfection as previously assumed by Aristotle and Ptolemy. His precise measurements indicated that "new stars" (now known as novae or supernovae), in particular that of 1572, lacked the parallax expected in sub-lunar phenomenon, and were therefore not "atmospheric" tail-less comets as previously believed, but occurred above the atmosphere and moon. Using similar measurements he showed that comets were also not atmospheric phenomena, as previously thought, and must pass through the supposed "immutable" celestial spheres.

During a variety of assignments, including service in the Spanish American War and the world cruise of the Great White Fleet, he showed an aptitude for naval gunnery, wrote a manual for gun and torpedo drills, helped set up the first wireless telegraphs on naval vessels, developed tactical doctrine for destroyers, and experimented with deploying aircraft to locate submarines.
